Next-Generation Autoclave Composite Curing
Autoclave processing represents the gold standard for manufacturing primary aerospace structures. By subjecting prepreg carbon fiber plies to simultaneous high pressure (up to 7 bar) and elevated temperatures (up to 250 °C) inside a vacuum-sealed pressure vessel, resin void content is suppressed below 0.5%.
1. Vacuum Bagging & Resin Flow
During the initial ramp phase, heat reduces resin viscosity, allowing trapped volatile gas bubbles to bleed out through vacuum breather plies. Applied autoclave pressure compresses prepreg layers together, maximizing interlaminar shear strength.
2. Thermal Cycle Optimization
Precise temperature ramp rates (typically 1.5–2 °C/min) prevent exothermic thermal runaway during resin cross-linking. Controlled cooling prevents residual thermal stress buildup within complex curved aircraft skins.
